How Clean Is Your Office Really? A 2 Minute Cleanliness Check
Most people know when a space is dirty. Overflowing trash, dirty floors, smudged glass, and a restroom that clearly needs attention are pretty easy to spot. But there is a much harder question to answer: Is your office actually as clean as it should be?
A space does not have to look obviously dirty to have areas that are being overlooked. Corners, high touch surfaces, floor edges, break room handles, ledges, and other less noticeable areas can slowly become part of the background. If you are an office or practice manager, you may not have time to walk through the entire facility every week looking for those things.
That is why we created the Cornerstone Commercial Cleaning CleanScore Quick Check. It is a simple two minute checklist designed to help you take an honest look at your space and see how it is actually being maintained.
Clean Does Not Always Mean "Looks Fine"
One of the easiest mistakes to make when evaluating a cleaning program is only looking at what is immediately obvious. You walk into the lobby and everything looks good. The floors look clean, the trash is empty, and the restroom smells fresh. It is easy to think, "We're good."
But what about the things you do not immediately notice?
Are the door handles being cleaned consistently? Are the corners and baseboards being addressed? Are fingerprints building up on entry glass? Are carpet spots being taken care of before they become permanent? Are break room appliance handles getting cleaned? Are supplies consistently stocked? Are less visible surfaces being dusted?
These details may not jump out at you during a normal workday, but together they make a significant difference in how clean and well maintained a facility actually feels.
A Quick Walkthrough Can Tell You a Lot
You do not need to spend an hour inspecting every room. Take two minutes and walk through your facility with fresh eyes.
Start at the entrance and look at the glass, doors, mats, floors, and reception area. Move through common areas and workspaces and pay attention to the surfaces people touch throughout the day. Check the restrooms and look closely at the floors, especially around edges and corners. Then take a look at the areas that tend to be overlooked.
The goal is not to find something wrong just for the sake of finding something wrong. It is to answer a simple question: Is the cleaning your facility is receiving matching the standard you expect?
Your Cleaning Company May Be Doing a Good Job. Or There May Be Gaps.
This is not about assuming your current cleaning company is doing a bad job. Sometimes your cleaning team is doing exactly what they were asked to do. The problem may simply be that the expectations were never clearly defined.
For example, your cleaning company may be responsible for vacuuming the carpets, but that does not necessarily mean carpet spots are being treated when they appear. Your team may clean restrooms, but are all of the less visible areas being addressed consistently? Your office may look clean every morning, but are high touch surfaces included in the routine?
A good cleaning program starts with knowing what needs to be cleaned, how often it should be cleaned, and how the results should be checked.
We Made the CleanScore to Make This Easier
The Cornerstone Commercial Cleaning CleanScore Quick Check covers six basic areas that can give you a better idea of how your facility is really being maintained.
First Impressions and Entry: Are your doors, glass, mats, lobby, signage, and entry areas looking the way they should?
High Touch Surfaces: Are handles, switches, shared equipment, conference room touchpoints, and other commonly touched surfaces being addressed?
Restrooms: Are fixtures, mirrors, floors, corners, supplies, and odors being properly managed?
Workspaces and Common Areas: Are desks, ledges, corners, break rooms, appliance handles, and trash being maintained?
Floors: Are carpets and hard floors being consistently cleaned, and are spots, edges, and buildup being addressed?
Cleaning Provider Basics: Do you know who has access to your facility? Do you have a current Certificate of Insurance? Is there a written scope of work? Is there a clear way to report issues? Is there a quality control or inspection process in place?
The process is simple. Walk through your space, check off what is true right now, and add up your score.
Be honest. The goal is not to get a perfect score. The goal is to see your facility as it actually is.
What Does Your Score Mean?
23 to 27: Excellent
Your space and cleaning program appear to be in great shape. Keep monitoring it and make sure those standards stay consistent.
17 to 22: Solid
Your facility is in pretty good shape, but there may be a few areas worth discussing with your cleaning provider.
10 to 16: Needs Attention
There are likely recurring gaps that are affecting the appearance and maintenance of your space.
Below 10: Time for a Fresh Look
Your facility may benefit from a closer review of the current cleaning program and what is actually being delivered.
